A group of university students launched a 24 hour blockade of one of the main arteries of the Serbian capital during departures on New Year’s holidays.

There pro-European youth Serbian party contests the results of the early legislative elections won by the nationalist right.

The students set up small tents, tables and chairs, brought food and blankets and played loud music at their makeshift camp near the government headquarters in Belgrade, ensuring they will stay put until start of another opposition rally scheduled for this Saturday.

Their action caused a massive traffic jam in the capital on Friday.

Saturday’s rally is expected to attract thousands of people as the results of the December 17 election are hotly contested by the opposition.

Opposition supporters were arrested during a demonstration last weekend.

For his part, President Aleksandar Vucic accuses the opposition of inciting violence with the aim of overthrowing the government on instructions from abroad, which opposition leaders deny.

THE Serbian Progressive Party is declared winner of the legislative and local elections, but the main opposition alliance, Serbia against violencealleges that fraud took place, particularly in Belgrade.
