British Prime Minister Kiir Starmer confirmed today, Monday, that the threat of Russia cannot be ignored, stressing that the United Kingdom should be ready to confront a new global reality that witnesses more threats and instability.
“People should understand that the world has changed,” Starmer said in an interview with journalist Nick Robinson on the BBC.
In response to a question about the statement of the British army commander, who said that the country should be ready to fight a war within 3 years, Starmer indicated that the matter does not necessarily mean sending British forces to fight, adding: “I hope that this will not happen, but we need to be prepared to ensure that this will not happen.”
He stressed that “the best way to deter the conflict is to prepare for the conflict,” adding that the Russian threat cannot be ignored and that “the United Kingdom must be ready and ready.”
Starmer explained that his government today launched a comprehensive review of defensive spending, aiming to define the current and future challenges facing the United Kingdom.
3 pillars for defense review
The Prime Minister explained that the defense spending review will be based on three main principles:
- Prepare to fight.
- The presence of integrated armed forces.
- Follow the “NATO first” approach.
He pointed out that there is now “more instability and threats” around the world, which requires an immediate and effective move to enhance British defense capabilities.
He also stressed that the world entered a new era in defense and security, which requires strengthening British military capabilities and coordination with NATO, saying: “We have to be ready.”
Starmer concluded his statements to praise Ukraine, describing it as “one of the most powerful fighting forces in Europe.” He stressed that Kiev “has the absolute right to defend herself” and that her resistance to the Russian attack reflects exceptional courage and flexibility.
He said that he is admired on every visit to Ukraine, noting that the current war has reshaped the balance of power on the continent, according to his statement.
