Three people were stabbed at Lyon station this Saturday morning. A suspect of Malian origin was arrested. The terrorist trail has not been accepted at this stage.
The stabbing attack, which left three people injured this Saturday morning at the Gare de Lyon, does not currently seem to resemble a terrorist act, declared Paris police prefect Laurent Nunez, specifying that the suspect “obviously suffers from psychiatric disorders.”
The attacker is of Malian nationality and was “in a regular situation in Italy since 2016, with a valid title issued in 2019” according to documents provided to investigators.
The man, aged 32, said “spontaneously” suffer from “psychiatric disorders” and drugs were found on him, added the police prefect during a press briefing at Lyon station.
According to the first elements of the investigation, the attacker attacked three travelers “using a knife and a hammer”.
One of the victims is “a seriously injured person” whose condition has “stabilized” but “his vital prognosis remains engaged”specified Laurent Nunez, contrary to what police sources initially stated.
Two other people were slightly injured and a fourth was in shock.
An investigation into attempted murder was opened and entrusted to the judicial police. As for the national anti-terrorism prosecution, it remains under observation.
The police chief indicated that the investigation was focusing on the elements contained in the attacker’s phone, on his journey to Italy, and on his statements at the end of which the terrorist trail may or may not be ruled out.
