Saint Peter’s Basilica is preparing for the great jubilee of Pope Francis in 2025. On this occasion, the Vatican announced the restoration of Bernini’s baldachin, with a total height of 29 meters, which covers the main altar. A monumental work, which should be ready by the end of the year and will cost around 700,000 euros. For the catering team, the challenge is significant.

“Everything is big in St. Peter’s and the challenge is also big as a result, and we are aware of that. The angels at the top are four meters high. (…) There is a layer, a thick layer of accumulation over the years, dust, particles, which forces us to think conclusively” explains Alberto Capitanucci, engineer of the St. Peter’s Basilica restoration team

The canopy will be covered during the work to allow liturgical celebrations to continue throughout the year. Saint Peter’s Basilica welcomes 50,000 tourists and pilgrims every day.
