The Spanish government announced Tuesday that it is developing technology based on age verification to protect minors from online pornography.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced his intention to adopt “a comprehensive law for minors on the Internet”, because access to pornographic content is, according to him, “a real epidemic”.
Experts have been warning for years about the negative effects it can have on children and adolescents.
“Everything that has to do with that age of eight to 12, with sexuality or sex, that’s what they’re going to learn, even what they’re going to desire or that will turn them on.” (…) “Most of the porn that reaches them at this age is done via shortcuts, links or discussions on Playchat” explains Marina Marroqui, social educator.
“There are impacts, a distortion of perception, the language in which we talk about women, the type of practices observed” adds Lluis Ballester, Doctor in Sociology and Psychology.
Half of Spaniards aged 12 to 15 have seen pornographic content at least once, and 25% before the age of 12.
70% of 13-17 year olds watch them regularly. 30% say pornography is their only source of sex education.
