A fire ripped through a complex of two residential buildings in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia on Thursday, killing 10 people and injuring 15 others, authorities said.
The death toll from the fire that occurred Thursday afternoon in a 138-story building in the city of Valencia now stands at at least ten dead and fourteen injured, according to local authorities.
The fire pushed fleeing residents onto balconies where some were rescued by firefighters, authorities said.
Firefighters rushed to the scene on the outskirts of the city center as flames spewed from the windows of the 14-story residential building where the fire broke out on the 4th floor.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with firefighters on Friday.
In solidarity, Valencia and Levante matches were postponed after the deadly fire. the city of Valencia declared three days of mourning. Other Spanish clubs offered their condolences to the city after the fire.
Soldiers from Spain’s military emergency unit were also deployed and doctors set up a large tent to treat the injured at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not certain at this stage, but press reports indicated that the flames spread quickly due to the materials used in the construction of this complex consisting of two buildings of 14 and 10 floors.
Some 90 soldiers from Spain’s emergency military unit and 40 firefighting trucks were also deployed.
The city of Valencia has declared three days of mourning.
