South Korean leader Yoon Suk-Yeol declared and lifted martial law in just a few hours. According to him, it was a response to the opposition, which he accused of paralyzing the government and of sympathizing with North Korea.
Political imbroglio in South Korea, the South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol declared emergency martial law on Tuesday evening, accusing the country’s opposition of controlling parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government through anti-state activities.
Yoon Suk-Yeol made the announcement during a televised press conference, calling the move “crucial” in defending the country’s constitutional order.
“To protect a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by the communist forces of North Korea and to eliminate anti-state elements, I hereby declare emergency martial law”Mr. Yoon said.
“Martial law aims to eradicate pro-Korean forces and protect constitutional order and freedom”he added.
Parliament met and overwhelmingly voted to overturn President Yoon’s decision.
The army tried to enter the Parliament building to stop the vote, but without success.
Outside, scuffles were reported between the police, the army and a few thousand demonstrators gathered near the gates of Parliament.
A little later, the soldiers finally withdrew places and those present celebrated in the street this decision of the end of martial law decreed by the deputies.
The president lifted martial law around 4 a.m. Seoul time (8 p.m. CET), temporarily ending the political crisis. Rumors of arrests of members of the opposition subsequently circulated, but it is impossible to have confirmation at this time.
The South Korean people celebrated this decision to end martial law in the streets.
Since taking office in 2022, the South Korean leader has sought to impose his program in the face of an opposition-controlled parliament.
