Prison authorities released famous Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius from Atteridgeville Correctional Center in the South African capital, Pretoria, on Friday morning.

The runner, also known for his disability, served nearly 9 years in prison of the approximately 13 years he received for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. His conditional release was approved last November.

It was on the night of February 13 to 14, 2013, the eve of Valentine’s Day, that Oscar Pistorius shot his partner Reeva Steenkamp, ​​29-year-old model, four times through the door of the bathroom of his bedroom. , killing her in her highly secure home in Pretoria.

The former Paralympic athlete claims to have used his firearm believing in the presence of a burglar. A version that he maintained throughout the affair for the next four years.

He was sentenced to five years in prison for manslaughter in 2014, the outcome of his first trial. However, the prosecution, which had estimated the sentence “scandalously lenient“, had requested a reclassification as murder.

After several calls and reading the autopsy report of the victim who had caused the accused to vomit, Oscar Pistorius was finally sentenced at the end of 2017 to 13 years and 5 months in prison for murder.

In South Africa, serious offenders are eligible for parole after serving at least half of their sentence.

Oscar Pistorius, 37, was initially expected to be housed at his uncle’s mansion in the upscale Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof, where he lived during his murder trial and where he was under house arrest for a period in 2015 -2016.

Just before Oscar Pistorius’ release, the victim’s mother said that Reeva Steenkamp’s relatives were “sentenced to life“.
