The Somali army and international peacekeepers regained “full control” on the strategic location of Beriri in the southern Shabili region in the south of the country, which was controlled by the Mujahideen youth movement, after battles that lasted for more than a week.
The Somali Ministry of Defense announced the restoration of “full control” on the city on Friday, and confirmed the killing of more than 100 members of the youth organization, without reference to any losses that were suffered by the joint forces.
The ministry added, “The security forces are continuing combing operations in the city and the surrounding areas, and large quantities of weapons and ammunition have been seized,” the ministry added.
Al -Shabaab dominated dozens of cities and villages since launched an attack early this year, which led to the government lost all the gains it achieved during its military campaign in 2022 and 2023.
In March, Al -Shabaab took Breiri, which included an important operational base for the Somali army, without a fight after the army’s withdrawal, and destroyed a basic bridge of military supply lines.
On August 1, the Somali army, in cooperation with the Ugandan Defense Forces, participating in the African Union operation in Somalia (Oasum) launched an attack to regain control of the city.
More than 10,000 African Union soldiers are deployed in the country, and yet Al -Shabaab’s attacks continue. At the end of June, at least 7 Ugandan soldiers were killed in clashes with Al -Shabab in a city in the Lower Shabili region.
Al -Shabaab claimed responsibility for the bombing of a bomb that almost hit the president’s procession on March 18, and several shells fired near the capital airport in early April.
