At a press conference in Handlová where Robert Fico has been hospitalized for 3 days, Defense Minister Robert Kalinak said that “the Prime Minister was operated on for two and a half hours. His condition remains very serious, but this operation allowed the wounds to heal better.”

He thanked the population for “all the words of support received“, and added that “all processes in the country continued to function“especially work in ministries.

He ended with this reassuring phrase, “the condition is stable and the patient is also stable today.”

Robert Fico, 59, was shot several times on Wednesday while greeting his supporters after a government meeting in this former mining town in central Slovakia.

The investigation continues

This Friday, the police accompanied by the suspect searched his home in Levice. She grabbed some documents and her computer.

A Slovak television channel showed images of the man helmeted, handcuffed and closely watched by elite troops, weapons in hand, just after the search.

Police did not comment due to prosecutors’ ban on publishing the suspect’s identity and other details of the case.

However, the press seems to know that it would be Juraj Chintula, a 71-year-old writer and poet. The motives for his action appear to be purely political.
