The assassination attempt against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico can only further divide society and politicianswarn members of small parties and actors in public life.

Lucia Štasselová, local councilor of Bratislava, believes that the causes of this accident are clear: “This happened because hate speech in public space is a very common thing, and our leaders are not doing anything about it.”

Gábor Grendel, MP of the opposition NOVA party, repeats that there is no place for violence in politics : “Both political camps need to think about what steps to take to ease tensions rather than fuel them.”

Hungarian Alliance MP Szabolcs Mózes cited the head of state’s statement on Thursday in Bratislava as an example: “the gesture of the outgoing and incoming heads of state was a very important gesture of common sense, when they said hand in hand with the message that we must not inflame tempers further.”

According to many reporters like the journalist and essayist Martin M. Šimečka, the consequences of this attack can only be negative : “It seems at the moment that everyone will calm down in a few days, but I don’t think that will really happen. I think it won’t take too long, I think things will get worse.”
