Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico appears for the first time since the attack

Populist Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico posted a speech online on Wednesday – his first public appearance since he was seriously injured in an assassination attempt three weeks ago.

In a pre-recorded speech posted on his Facebook account before the European Parliament election, Mr Fico said the attack had seriously damaged his health and that “it would be a small miracle if I returned to work in several weeks” .

Mr. Fico is recovering from multiple injuries after being shot in the abdomen while greeting supporters on May 15 in the town of Handlova, about 140 kilometers northeast of the capital, Bratislava. An attacker was arrested.

Mr Fico said he should be back at work at the end of June and July and that he felt “no hatred” towards his attacker. “I forgive him,” he said.
