Science, business and sports: Qatari women making a difference


From jewelry to sports to technology and science industries, women are playing an active role in shaping Qatar’s future.

In this episode, the Qatar 365 team continues to highlight women in Qatar. Laila Humairah met renowned Qatari designers at the 20th edition of the Doha Jewelry and Watch Fair.

Reem Al Shamari runs WITR Jewelry and uses precious metals to create unique pieces from each person’s iris. DJWE 2024 offered Qatari women entrepreneurs, like Sameera Al Mulla, a springboard to make their presence known. Through her brand, Hessa Jewels, she wishes to embody the essence and beauty of Arab women.

The Web Summit, held for the first time in the MENA region, allowed the Qatar 365 team to meet female leaders in the booming start-up and technology industry. Katherine Maher, CEO and board member of Web Summit, gave Aadel Haleem a tour of the site. She shared her views on the growing involvement of women in technology as entrepreneurs, engineers or technologists.

The world of sport also has a large number of inspiring women. Olympic fencing champion Ibtihaj Muhammad told Aadel Haleem that her greatest achievement was competing in major competitions. She hopes her story will inspire all girls and women around the world.

Paulette Fortez Sanchez is the Director of Programs and Operations at Generation Amazing. Paulette explained to Aadel that such initiatives are essential for young girls to find a role model. The organization, born from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, enables young people to flourish through sport and education.
