Scandinavia facing an extreme cold snap

Extreme cold and snowstorms have disrupted transport and led to the closure of some schools in Scandinavia.

The –40 degree mark was crossed for the first time this winter with, for example – 43.6 degrees in the north of Sweden, in Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka. A record unmatched since 1999, according to the Swedish press agency TT. Schools had to close and electric trains were stopped.

I’m used to the cold, but when the temperature drops below 40 degrees, even I find it very cold“, explains Erik Sarri, who lives in Stockholm.

Norway is not spared from this cold snap either, with snowfall and temperatures around –30 degrees.

While Norwegian motorists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, this is also the case in Denmark, where up to 70 centimeters of snow is expected in some areas of the country.

This cold, which will persist for a few more days, will settle in other parts of Europe, particularly in France, from this weekend.
