Russian authorities finally handed over the body of opponent Alexeï Navalny to his mother.
His mother had been asking for her son’s body for more than a week. The Russian authorities finally granted his request. Alexeï Navalny’s body was handed over to him, according to a close friend of the dissident’s team.
Vladimir Putin’s number one opponent died during his incarceration from a still unknown cause last week. Since then, his mother and his wife have repeatedly appealed to be able to bury their deceased with dignity.
On Friday, the dissident’s entourage claimed that Navalny’s mother was under pressure to keep his burial secret, otherwise the man would have been buried anonymously in his penal colony.
After five days of waiting, Lyoudmila Navalnaïa was finally able to see her son’s body last Thursday.
Kira Iarmich, the family’s spokesperson, thanked on the X network all those who urged the Russian authorities to return the body. She added that she did not know if “the authorities will prevent (the funeral) from taking place as the family wishes and as Alexei deserves.”
