Russia: sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky was sentenced to five years in prison


Russian justice accuses him of “justifying terrorism” following a message posted on social networks. This left-wing intellectual is known for his anti-war stance in Ukraine.

He was previously held in temporary prison, the renowned sociologist and theoretician of Marxist thought Boris Kagarlitsky was sentenced by Russian justice to five years in prison.

He is accused of “justifying terrorism” because of his speech on the motivations of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Crimean bridge explosion

The security service therefore opened criminal proceedings against Boris Kagarlitsky for an article published online about the Crimean bridge explosion in 2022. Since then, he has been in pre-trial detention.

This left-wing intellectual known for his particularly anti-war positions since the start of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict did not exile himself from Russia even when the authorities qualified him as a “foreign agent”.

He had been worried by the Russian authorities following an old message posted on social networks in which he explained that the attack on the Crimean bridge by Ukrainian forces could be understood from a military point of view
