The only opponent of Vladimir Putin in the race for the Russian presidential election, Boris Nadejdine obtained the 100,000 signatures required to validate his candidacy. This Wednesday he went to the Central Electoral Commission to submit his signatures collected throughout the country in order to move to the next stage of the electoral process.

Boris Nadezhdine’s candidacy had aroused enthusiasm among supporters of peace in Ukraine, thousands of people had queued in the cold to allow him to qualify. An unusual display of sympathy for the opposition in a firmly controlled political landscape.

A candidate opposed to war

Boris Nadezhdine, openly opposed to Russian military intervention in Ukraine, promised to end the war and release political prisoners detained in Russia such as opponent Alexeï Navalny. He was nominated by the party Civic initiative and supported by opposition figures.

The Central Election Commission is expected to examine Boris Nadezhdine’s documents and decide whether or not to register him in the presidential race.

Boris Nadezhdine promises to end fighting in Ukraine and release political prisoners if he becomes president. To do this, he proposes negotiations with the “sponsors of Ukraine”, that is to say Ukraine’s allies in its defense against Russian aggression.

But by his own admission, Vladimir Putin does not consider him a threat. The Kremlin, which downplays the scope of his candidacy “does not consider him as a competitor”.

The first round of the Russian presidential election will be held from March 15 to 17.
