Vladimir Putin’s main opponent is dead. Incarcerated in a new prison on the borders of Russia, after a recent transfer, Alexeï Navalny, 47, died, according to federal prison authorities.

An opponent of Vladimir Putin, incarcerated since 2021, he saw his initial sentence of 9 years for “fraud” increase to 19 years of imprisonment for “extremism”. He was serving this prison sentence in a remote penal colony in the Arctic.

Last December, Alexeï Navalny’s health was the subject of concern, the latter having continued to deteriorate since his detention.

The Federal Prison Service said in a statement that Alexei Navalny did not feel well after a walk on Friday and lost consciousness.

An ambulance arrived to try to resuscitate him, but he died.

Several countries were moved by his disappearance. For the European Union, the Russian regime is solely responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who received his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky this Friday, this death shows “how much Russia has changed and what type of regime is in power today“.

French President Emmanuel Macron criticized Russian power.
