A measure which fuels the escalation of tensions between Moscow and the Baltic countries.
Russia launches a wanted notice against Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
The notice, visible this Tuesday on the website of the Russian Interior Ministry, mentions “a criminal case”, without giving further details.
In recent months, the Baltic leader has distinguished herself by her desire to strengthen military support for Ukraine, but also by the demolition of statues to the glory of Soviet soldiers dating from the Second World War, arousing the ire of Moscow.
“These people are responsible for decisions that are de facto an insult to history,” said Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin. “These are people who carry out hostile actions against historical memory, against our country.”
This is the first time that the Kremlin has issued a wanted notice against leaders of the Baltic countries. Estonian Secretary of State Taimar Peterkop is also targeted, as is Lithuanian Culture Minister Simonas Kairys, who sees this measure as an attempt to “stifle freedom” on the part of Moscow.
