The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today, Sunday, that Russia has officially agreed to the Taliban government’s nomination as its ambassador to Moscow, at a time when economic and political relations between the two countries affected by the sanctions are witnessing a remarkable development.

Last April, Russia raised its ban on the Taliban, which it ranked for more than two decades, in a move that paved the way for Moscow to normalize relations with the movement that leads Afghanistan.

No country has officially announced its recognition of the Taliban government that took over the reins of power in Afghanistan in 2021 after the withdrawal of the US -led forces from the country.

“We hope that this new stage will allow the two countries to expand cooperation in various fields,” said Amir Khan Mottaki, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban government.

In 2023, China became the first country to accept a diplomat at the level of an ambassador from the Taliban, and has followed several countries since then, including Pakistan, which announced the raising of the level of diplomatic representation with Afghanistan during the past week.

Diplomats say that submitting the Ambassador’s credentials to a foreign head is a step towards recognition.
