Estonia proposes to take joint measures with Russia to end the dispute between the two countries over the border Narva River.
A border conflict has been opposing Estonia and Russia for several months through buoys around the Narva River, which marks the border between the two countries.
In the early hours of May 24, Russian border guards have removed buoys marking the waterway in the Narva River on the border with Estonia, claiming they were on the Russian side.
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has proposed on Monday that the two countries jointly conduct surveys to clarify the situation.
A “border incident”
“We were told once again that they considered these buoys to be in Russian waters and that they had the right to remove them.”explains Kerli Veski, director general of the legal department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “This is a border incident that we must recognize.”
“It is obvious that we cannot admit something we did not do, because we placed the buoys in Estonian waters”she adds.
Estonia has proposed to to complete joint measures by August.
In case of Russia’s refusal, the Estonian government said it would maintain navigation buoys in Estonian waters according to previous measures.
