Construction of the new line is expected to take 10 years and is expected to be one of the most complex projects in the world.
These mammoth works, estimated to cost nearly 3 billion euros, should be completed by 2034.
The metro line, in preparation for 20 years, has been delayed by financial problems and above all by archaeological excavations necessary due to the underground ruins of imperial and medieval Roman civilizations which lie in its path.
Once completed, Line C will pass beneath some of the world’s most important cultural sites, the Colosseum, Trajan’s Column and the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, the largest building in the Roman Forum, before reaching its terminus at the Vatican.
The work is in the preliminary phase, it involves digging a retaining wall 85 meters deep around the perimeter of the future station called Piazza Venezia.
