Romania’s ruling coalition has decided to merge the election dates of the European and local elections. The opposition denounces an undemocratic decision.
Romania’s ruling coalition has reached an agreement to merge European and local elections. The social democrats of the PSD and the liberals of the PNL will appear on joint lists for the European legislative elections on June 9 and separately for the local elections. The presidential election will take place in September, probably on the 8th for the first round and the 22nd for the second round.
“We have decided, in addition to the merger and the electoral alliance between the Social Democratic Party and the National Liberal Party for the European Parliament list, to organize the presidential elections in September” declared Marcel Ciolacu, Romanian Prime Minister and leader of the PSD.
The opposition parties reject this merger and the holding of these elections. They announced that they would take the executive to court. According to them, this decision is “undemocratic and unconstitutional”.
