River levels remain high in Europe

Central and northern Europe are hit by floods following torrential rains.

In the North of England, three men were found dead trapped in their vehicle which had fallen into a river, according to local media.

There storm Gerrit caused heavy rainfall, damaged homes and left thousands without power.

Rail traffic is interrupted in places, roads are closed and flights from London are suspended.

Hundreds of people were also evacuated in several regions of Germany.

For the first time in ten years, the Pretzien dam is opened near Magdeburg, to divert a third of water from the Elbe in a channel.

Meanwhile, sandbags were piled up to erect temporary dikes in response to rising water levels.

Residents are waiting for the flood to recede in emergency accommodation.

In neighboring Netherlands, The Rhine reached a level much higher than normal.

The decline is expected next week.

Deventer city emergency workers piled sandbags along the river and closed roads to prepare for flooding.

In the eastern Netherlands, several floodplains were underwater in recent days.

In Hungary, the Danube has overflowed in Budapest.

The heavy rains worsened the effects of melting snow.

In the south of the country, the flood peak is expected to be reached in the New Year.
