The media advisor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), Adnan Abu Hasna, said that international humanitarian law, United Nations covenants and the Fourth Geneva Convention are applied in the whole world except in the Gaza Strip, stressing that the international community and the global legal system show a catastrophic failure in protecting civilians in the Gaza Strip.
In statements to Al -Jazeera Net, Abu Hasna added, “There is a double standards now,” asking: “How can the world watch this killing, starvation and the use of aid as a weapon?” He pointed out that the use of humanitarian aid as a pressure tool is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.
This comes at a time when Israel has applied the siege about 2.2 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip 11 weeks in a row.
UNRWA Commissioner -General Philip Lazarini said – in previous statements today – that Israel is taking advantage of hunger and food for political and military purposes, stressing that Gaza needs tremendous support and without obstacles or interruption to ensure the confrontation of the worsening hunger suffered by the residents of the Gaza Strip.
On Monday, Israel announced that it allowed 100 trucks of aid to enter Gaza, but a spokesman for the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs, Jens Larki, indicated that only 5 trucks had already entered Gaza.
Israeli plan
Commenting on the Israeli plan aimed at displacing the people of Gaza to the southern Gaza Strip, UNRWA media advisor said it represents a “forced displacement of a large people”, warning that it may lead to a war crime.
Abu Hasna pointed out that the Gaza Strip suffers from a famine, and that “the situation cannot continue in this way, as there is a real famine, scenes, pictures and reports documenting the disaster in Gaza.”
Even there are Israeli official confessions by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that there is a famine in Gaza, according to Adnan Abu Hasna.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s office said yesterday – in an official statement – that allowing the entry of a “basic amount” of food to the Strip came to “motivated the operational need to expand the scope of fighting”, and not for humanitarian reasons, adding that the aid aims to prevent the exacerbation of the hunger crisis in Gaza, as the deterioration of humanitarian conditions may endanger the military operation.
Western transformations
In the past few days, several European countries – including France, Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands – have called for an urgent investigation whether Israeli attacks on Gaza violate the commercial agreements signed with the European Union, which include human rights items.
Yesterday, the French Foreign Minister called for a review of the partnership agreement between the European Union and Israel against the background of the continuation of the occupation army in the genocide war against the residents of the Gaza Strip and prevented him from entering aid to the Strip.
Therefore, UNRWA media advisor assesses transformations in Western positions that it bears increasing importance to increase pressure on the Israeli government, but at the same time stressed the necessity of a real shift in the American position, saying: President Donald Trump can stop famine and war in Gaza. “
These Western transformations are confirmed by a professor of political science at the American University of Paris Ziad Majid, noting that he notes a change in the European accent and terminology, especially after French President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to recognize a Palestinian state next June, and that his signing a statement with British and Canada ministers reflects this trend.
But Majid is not fully identified with these transformations, and is questioning a fundamental change, stressing that the alliance with Israel is still existing despite criticism.
“The actual test is in the extent of the adoption of penalties and not only statements, which is what the International Criminal Court has requested since December 2023”, noting that the precautionary measures to prevent genocide have not been dealt with seriously yet, and it is evidence of the weak political will in European capitals.
Legal pressure
Majid pointed out – in statements to Al -Jazeera Net – to the seriousness of the Europeans in implementing the arrest warrants that the International Criminal has called for the right of Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant, asking: “Will they prevent Netanyahu’s visits or even his flight in European airspace if they decide to implement international law?”
Human rights organizations threatened to prosecute European governments on charges of collusion in the genocide to which Gaza residents are exposed due to the continued economic cooperation between Europe and Israel despite the documentation of these war crimes.
The partnership agreement between the European Union and Israel entered into force in June 2000, and Israel gives many privileges in the European Union market, and the volume of trade between them reached 46.8 billion euros in 2022, making the European Union the largest commercial partner for Israel.
“If the term genocide is still governmental rejected, war crimes and crimes against humanity are indescribable, and not acting on this is a form of collusion,” said Paris, a professor of political science in Paris.
He stressed that the real test lies in making decisions to freeze agreements, impose sanctions, or adhere to the implementation of the decisions of the Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, stressing that what is happening so far is verbal attempts without a tangible impact on the ground.
In addition to the applicable siege imposed by the Israeli occupation on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, the number of martyrs in the Strip reached today more than 53 thousand, and about 122 thousand injuries as a result of the aggression of the occupation army, as well as unknown numbers under the rubble of their homes, according to the latest census of the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip.
