Oman- The recent Israeli allegations of smuggling weapons to the West Bank across the border with Jordan have re -shed light on the Kingdom’s border file, and the Israeli endeavor to establish an insulating wall along the border parts between the two sides.

This comes after the approval of the Israeli mini cabinet “cabinet”, on Sunday evening, on a new plan to build a wall along the eastern border with Jordan, in the wake of two failed attempts to infiltrate foreigners.

The implementation of the project will begin in two basic stages, the first extends from the border fence to the Jordan River, and the second between the so -called “yellow barrier” and “red barrier”, provided that this stage includes setting up an actual fence equipped with sensors, advanced alarms, and military inspection points.

The border between the Jordanian and Israeli parties is separated by a thorny fence and some areas planted with mines (French)

A threat to peace

In the first Jordanian official response to the Israeli decision, a high -ranking government source confirmed in a statement to Al -Jazeera Net that “the barriers do not make peace, and do not bring security,” adding that “giving the Palestinian people their full rights is topped by the right to self -determination, and to establish their state, is what will achieve security and peace.”

On August 13, 2024, Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz called for a speedy building of a wall along the border with Jordan, claiming that “the Iranian Revolutionary Guard units are cooperating with Hamas in Lebanon to smuggle weapons and money to Jordan, and from there to the West Bank.”

The Jordanian border is 335 km, of which 97 km with the West Bank, 238 km with Israel, and Jordan is linked with the Israeli side with 3 border crossings: Sheikh Hussein (Jordan River from the Israeli side), the King Hussein Bridge (Al -Nabi crossing) and the Wadi Araba crossing (Isaac Rabin).

The Israeli move to build the separation wall on the entire Jordanian -Israeli border has caused regional and international attention, and varying reactions, as this wall extends along large parts of the border, and it is expected that it will be similar in its design to the walls that were held on the border between the Israeli side, Egypt, southern Lebanon, and Gaza Strip.

The project raised questions about its political and security effects, especially on bilateral relations between Israel and Jordan, which have been linked to a peace agreement since 1994, especially with regard to the possible repercussions on the border movement and security cooperation between the two sides, in addition to concerns about the human and political dimension of such a step in a region with a highly sensitive geopolitical.

Israeli motives

Details of the Israeli plan, which the Ministry of the Army, in cooperation with the Staff, indicates that the wall will extend from the occupied southern Syrian Golan to the northern regions of the southern city of Eilat.

The defensive system is based on several layers, including material infrastructure, control, intelligence, command and control centers, in addition to the deployment of light and flexible military forces that adapt to changing field threats.

It is noteworthy that there is currently an old mesh fence equipped with sensors along the border parts, specifically those that extend along the West Bank, while the other parts are equipped only with barbed wire.

The talk about building Israel escalated a wall with Jordan after the two operations that took place at the Al -Nabi crossing on the eighth of last September and near the Dead Sea on October 18, where the first witnessed the killing of 3 Israelis and the martyrdom of the Jordanian operation perpetrator Maher Al -Jazi, while the second resulted in the injury of Israelis and the martyrdom of the Jordanian executors Hossam Abu Ghazaleh and Amer Qawas.

The Israeli occupation army has recently announced the announcement of the Israeli security services thwarting many attempts to smuggle weapons across the border with the Jordanian side and from there to the West Bank, claiming that there is a “weapon smuggling network”, and that Tel Aviv has submitted indictment against many people who accuse them of involvement in the alleged network.

Qasim: According to international law, building the separation wall with Jordan is invalid (communication sites)

Illegal justified

For his part, international law expert Anis Qassem said that the consultative opinion issued by the International Court of Justice, and by the majority of the judges requires that the Israeli presence on the occupied Palestinian territories is “illegal”, explaining by saying, “This entails that everything that Israel does in these occupied lands is illegal.”

“Considering this, this applies to the decision of the International Court of Justice on the separation wall that the occupation seeks to build on the Jordanian border with the Palestinian territories,” he said, noting that it is an old Israeli plan, the occupation was seeking to establish it, but Jordan expressed a strong protest against this at that stage.

The expert in international law emphasized that the establishment of the separation wall is invalid, but that “the Zionist right -wing plan aims to cut the communication of the Palestinian lands with the outside world, and thus the future state of Palestine becomes behind the wall that will establish it, and there will be no contact between Palestine and the outside world, especially with Jordan,” he said.

Regarding the statements of the Israeli side that there are many attempts to smuggle weapons between the Jordanian -Israeli border, Qasim described it as “flimsy justifications that the Israeli Defense Minister repeats to curb the smuggling of weapons and fighters,” stressing that there is no detailed statement on the number of operations in which weapons or people were arrested.

“We realize that the Jordanian armed forces are based on these limits effectively and influential, and therefore there are no appeals in Jordanian performance on the borders with occupied Palestine,” added international law.

An attack on sovereignty

The deputy in the Jordanian parliament, lawyer Saleh Al -Armouti, indicated that – since the beginning of the launch of the Israeli allegations – he asked a parliamentary question to former Prime Minister Bishr Al -Khasawneh about the measures taken by his government after the occupation state announced its intention to launch a wall along the border with Jordan.

Al -Armouti added in his interview with Al -Jazeera Net that “the separation wall that the occupation is seeking to build on the Jordanian -Palestinian border is considered a blatant attack on Jordanian sovereignty, as it aims to put new obstacles in front of the establishment of the Palestinian state.”

Al -Armouti stressed that the Israeli talk about security motives for building the wall is incorrect, and added that Jordan must file a complaint with the Security Council, “this step constitutes a violation of global peace, and it is our duty to defend our country.”
