To the west of the village of Ain Karem, the migrant southwest of the occupied city of Jerusalem, Ain water and a monastery established by the Christians were set up by Ain and Deir al -Hubais, and it is considered one of the most important religious monuments in Jerusalem since the Byzantine era.

The name “Al -Habbis” refers to the meaning of impartiality, meditation and self -confinement on that, as it was used by the monks who lived the life of isolation and tolerance.

The history of the place dates back to the Byzantine era, as the Christians established a chapel for worship near the spring of water, then the Franks came, and they established a monastery that still remains until today.

The current monastery was built in 1921, and in the 1948 war, the Haganah forces seized it, and turned it into a military barracks, so the monks resorted to the nearby village of Ain Karem.

The monastery is surrounded by stone walls with a gateway from the east. Inside, in addition to the eye and the cave, there is a church, gardens, orchards and a mausoleum that is said to be the place of burial “Al -Yaaba”, the mother of John the Baptist, as it is believed that she worshiped in the cave adjacent to the source before she carried and gave birth to her son, and it was to worship her son at the same site.

The monastery overlooks the homes of the village of Shataf al -Muharraf and its orchards, and the valley of Al -Sarar, which separates them.
