In early May 2025, the Israeli Security Security Council, the mini -cabinet, approved the “Gideon” operation plan with the aim of achieving a military and political resolution in the Gaza Strip, through an organized operation of 3 stages, with 5 pressure factors against the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in an attempt to force it to accept an agreement to exchange prisoners and dismantle its military structure. The Israeli army began implementing it by summoning tens of thousands of reserve soldiers.
The objectives of the process
The operation aims to occupy the entire Gaza Strip, according to the official Israeli Broadcasting Corporation on May 5, 2025.
Naming
The process is called the Hebrew “Merkavot Gideon”, which means “Gideon’s vehicles” and bears religious, historical and military connotations, as Israel previously called one of its operations in the “Nakba 1948” name “Gideon Operation” and aimed to control the Palestinian region of Bisan and expel its residents.
The launch of the name “Gideon’s vehicles” indicates the process of expanding the war in Gaza to what the occupation intends to implement in the Strip, as it is expected to be more fierce than its predecessor, when the Palestinians were subjected to a collective genocide in Bisan.
And Haruna is a Hebrew word that means the wrestler, which is a biblical figure mentioned in the book of the judges, which fought the indisputors, “whom God has shed on the children of Israel, the evil of their actions, so God commanded Gideon to rid the Children of Israel, and asked him to demolish the altar of Baal and his people revolted against him, and only a few stand with him.”
According to what was stated in the Torah, Gideon set out with an army of 30,000, and only 300 were left of them, but they were able to overcome the debtor army – and they started from the Hijaz – and made them retreat until after the Jordan River, and eliminated their kings and the rest of their army.
Displaced in the Israeli press is referred to as a national hero who saved the Children of Israel from the evolving city of the city at the time, as they were fluent in the leadership of beauty, and they knew “their violence, speed and surprise in the attack”, while Gideon was able to overcome them “with simple army and simple tools, including the vehicles, with a tight military plan.”
Gideon operation
Gideon was one of the last operations carried out by the “Haganah” organization before the end of the British Mandate, as part of the context of the civil war in Palestine in 1947 and 1948.
The operation aimed to seize the city of Bisan, and to purify the villages and the surrounding Bedouin camps, in addition to closing one of the possible corridors to enter the forces of eastern Jordan.
The operation was carried out by the Golani Brigade, between 10 and 15 May 1948, and it was part of what was known as the “Dalit Plan”, which the Haganah developed to control the largest possible amount of the lands of Palestine before the announcement of the establishment of Israel.
The most prominent stages
The operation aims, according to the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, to expand the scope of the war in the first stage, which is expected to continue for several months, with “the comprehensive evacuation of the entire Gaza population from the fighting areas, including north of Gaza, to areas in the southern Gaza Strip” with the Israeli army remaining and occupying.
Israel will use civilian companies with the aim of demarcating the areas that the army will determine, including an area in Rafah, which Israel claims to be “safe”, and another area behind the Morag axis, with the search for those involved in it to ensure that there are no elements of Hamas.
The “humanitarian plan” will do after the field operations and the evacuation of the Gazans to the south, which was indicated in the second stage, in which air operations will be carried out in conjunction with ground operations, and the transfer of the civilian population to “safe shelters” in Rafah.
In the third stage, Israeli military forces will storm Gaza by land to occupy large parts of them gradually with the aim of preparing for a long -term military presence in the Strip in order to “eliminate Hamas and demolish all tunnels.”
