Rain of reactions following the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Hateful rhetoric, which we can see in society, leads to hateful actions. Please stop“, urged Slovak President Zuzana Caputova at a press conference.

This attack is a terrible incident and I see it as an attack on the principles of Slovak democracy. Such an attack has never taken place in Slovakia“, said Peter Žiga (HLAS-SD), Deputy Speaker of the Slovak Parliament.

The presidents of the European institutions as well as many heads of state and government condemned the attack and gave their support to the Slovak leader who was shot and wounded.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen also “strongly condemned” this “vile attack”.

“Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most precious common good,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola wrote that she was “shocked by this horrible attack” and condemned this “violent act”.

For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was “deeply shocked” at the news of a “cowardly attack”. “Violence must have no place in European politics,” he assures.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says he is “deeply shocked” by a “heinous attack on his friend” and says he is praying for his health and recovery.
