Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announces she will abdicate on January 14


Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced her decision to abdicate on Sunday evening.

The monarch, whose role is largely ceremonial, made the announcement during her New Year’s speech on Sunday.

She said she would leave office on January 14, the anniversary of the 1972 death of her father, King Frederik IX, and his succession to the throne.
