Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed on Monday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “joint mediation efforts to end the war on the Gaza Strip.”
The Qatari Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs received a phone call from Guterres, during which they discussed developments in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories, especially joint mediation efforts to end the war on the Strip.
According to the statement, the two sides also discussed the issue of releasing prisoners and detainees, and the sustainable entry of humanitarian aid into all areas of the Strip, in addition to discussing the latest developments in the region.
In a related context, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said during a Security Council session on the Gaza Strip that the United States is working with Egypt and Qatar to find a way to move forward in negotiations that is acceptable to both parties.
Matthew Miller, spokesman for the US State Department, confirmed today, Monday, that Washington continues its dialogue with partners in the region, especially Egypt and Qatar, to present a revised proposal regarding a ceasefire in Gaza.
He told reporters that he had no timetable for presenting the proposal, which has been expected for several weeks, adding that Washington was trying to ensure that the proposal could push Israel and Hamas to reach a final agreement.
The indirect negotiations between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), led by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, have reached a critical stage, due to the insistence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to continue the war on the Strip, and his adherence to the Philadelphi and Netzarim axes in the south and center of the Strip, while Hamas demands a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the return of the displaced without restrictions.
Israel estimates that there are 101 prisoners in Gaza, while Hamas announced the killing of dozens of prisoners in random Israeli raids.
With full American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, leaving more than 136,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amidst massive destruction and deadly famine.
In contempt of the international community, Israel continues this war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
