Prosecutor investigating TV studio attack shot dead in Ecuador


According to the prosecution, the murdered prosecutor in Guayaquil was responsible for determining which gang had carried out the assault last week on the set of the public channel TC Television.

The prosecutor who was investigating the attack on the set of a public television station last week was shot dead Wednesday in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s most dangerous city.

Prosecutor César Suárez, who had led other high-profile investigations in the past, was shot and killed while driving an armored vehicle, Attorney General Diana Salazar said. “Organized crime groups, criminals and terrorists will not end our commitment to society“.

Thirteen suspected perpetrators were arrested in the surreal assault on TC Television while it was live. President Daniel Noboa declared that Ecuador is in “internal armed conflict“, facing a wave of assassinations and other crimes linked to drug trafficking.

César Suárez was also in charge of theMetastasis affair involving an Ecuadorian drug lord who allegedly received preferential treatment from judges, prosecutors, police officers and high-ranking officials.

Ecuadorian police said they were working to find those responsible for Suárez’s killing.

Violence linked to drug trafficking

Ecuador has been rocked by a series of attacks, including the kidnapping of several police officers, following the prison escape of a notorious gang leader.

José Adolfo Macías Villamar, leader of Los Choneros, one of the Ecuadorian gangs considered responsible for a surge in car bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, has been reported missing from his prison cell where he was serving a sentence for trafficking of narcotics.

His disappearance earlier this month led the government to declare a state of emergency and send the military to prisons, sparking a wave of at least 30 attacks in the South American country, including l attack on the Guayaquil television station.
