In Europe, 95 million people, or one in five Europeans, are at risk of extreme poverty. Last year, the European Commission announced plans to reduce the number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion by 15 million, including 5 million children, compared to 2019 levels. But so far, the European club did not take charge.
Women are much more at risk of poverty than men. In the Baltic countries, poverty goes hand in hand with old age, whereas in France, it affects young people more. In fact, 27% of those under 18 are affected, which is more than the European average.
Work is not always a solution to poverty: one in 10 workers is poor in Europe. The EU has nevertheless imposed the minimum wage. On December 13, an agreement was reached between the Council and the European Parliament to allow platform workers to benefit from a more favorable legal framework with a presumption of employment.
