A recent poll conducted by the “Yugov” Foundation for the German News Agency showed that nearly half of the German voters consider Russia a military threat to their country, in light of the continuation of the war in Ukraine and the escalation of security tensions in Europe.
According to the survey, 13% of their viewers believe that Russia is a “very large” military threat, while 36% believes it represents a “great” threat, which means that 49% of the Germans feel varying degrees of concern about the Russian threat.
On the other hand, 30% said that the threat is limited, while 14% did not see any threat at all, which reflects a wide variation in the positions inside the German street.
Steel partitional division
The poll revealed clear divisions in the evaluation of the Russian threat in accordance with partisan affiliations. Between 58% and 62% of supporters of the ruling coalition parties – the Christian alliance, the Social Democratic Party, and the Green Party – saw that Russia pose a great or great threat.
Nevertheless, about a third of the supporters of these parties do not see in Russia a significant threat.
On the other hand, supporters of the “Alternative for Germany” populist party adopted a different position, as 65% of them said that Russia does not represent a real military threat, while only 29% considered that it posed a threat.
As for the supporters of the new populist “Sara Vagnincit” party, who are not represented in Parliament, they were divided in turn, as 33% considered that Russia represents a threat, compared to 51% in which they did not see any danger.
The supporters of the Left Party were almost equally divided, as 48% of them considered that Russia represents a threat compared to 47% who do not share this view.
Government position
This poll comes at a time when the German government is working to enhance its defense capabilities and increase its military spending to counter what it considers “a growing Russian risk.”
“This path is the correct response to a threat we all see every day, at least after the 3 and a half years of Russian aggression war against Ukraine. Russia is an aggressive state with clear imperialist ambitions,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pisorius, who belongs to the Social Democratic Party.
The survey was conducted between 11 and 14 July, and included a sample of 2192 German citizens who are entitled to vote.
