Poland will deploy its “Eastern Shield” to make its borders more watertight with Belarus, to the east, and with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad (in the north of the country).

This shield consists of an investment plan of nearly 2.3 billion euros, announced Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

“We have decided to invest 10 billion zlotys in our security, and above all in a secure eastern border”declared the Polish leader and clarified:“We began this work to make the Polish border secure in peacetime and impenetrable for an enemy in wartime.”

The Prime Minister was speaking to Polish troops in Krakow, in the south of the country, to mark 80 years since the Allied victory in the Battle of Monte Cassino against the Nazis during the Second World War.

The work will involve building appropriate military fortifications to complement the infrastructure already funded by the former conservative National government.

The Prime Minister also recalled that this shield must be supported by strong European air defense. “We need a safe sky above Poland. We need the European dome that Poland wants to build with other countries of the European Union”, with Germany in particular.

Warsaw also closely monitors its border with Belarus. Warsaw fears that the Minsk regime will restart its blackmail of migrants.
