The broadcast of the Polish generalist channel TVP abruptly interrupted after the announcement of the dismissal of the management team of the country’s public media.

The new coalition in power in Poland had voted the day before by Parliament a resolution calling for the “restoration of legal order, impartiality and credibility of public media.”

Marek Rutka, board member of public television, radio and agencies: “There is going to be a change in the management teams and the board of directors (of public media), a change in the teams that create the programs, journalists or rather pseudo-journalists. Quite simply, public television will be returned to the people.”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his pro-European coalition accused public media of being a proxy for the former populist government and its Law and Justice party.

Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki denounces the takeover of the media as “the first step towards a dictatorship.”
