Poland began today, Monday, random searches on its common border with Germany, including 52 border crossings, in a move that the authorities said was a response to Berlin’s tightening of border control months ago.
In the beginning of July, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced these measures, which will continue in principle until the fifth of August, and also includes the inspection of travelers coming from Lithuania.
Although Poland and Germany are members of the European Schengen region, which canceled routine inspection on the border between its countries, Germany started since October 2023 to implement random tests on the border with Poland, as part of a strict immigration policy pursued by the government of German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz.
The Polish authorities explained that the inspections will focus on small buses and vehicles that carry large numbers of passengers or with shaded windows, in an attempt to reduce irregular migration.
This step comes amid a escalating political tension between Warsaw and Berlin on immigration issues, as the German government recently announced that it will begin to restore asylum seekers from the Polish border, which sparked widespread controversy in Poland.
According to the German Ministry of Interior, about 1,300 people have been refused to enter the border with Poland since May 8, in an indication of the escalation of restrictions on immigrants.
