Kyiv has pledged to explore new ways to shoot down all Russian missiles and drones in Ukrainian airspace, in cooperation with Warsaw, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday.

Mr Zelensky announced the news of the security agreement in a message posted on the social network X, specifying that this “unprecedented document” also included the formation and training of a new Ukrainian volunteer military unit, the Ukrainian Legion, on Polish territory.

We thank you for your solidarity with our country and our people, as well as for your support and assistance.“, Mr. Zelensky said.

On Tuesday, NATO will hold its summit in Washington. Leaders are expected to explore ways to provide long-term security assistance and military training to Ukraine, more than two years after Russia began its invasion.

The talks came hours after Russian missiles killed at least 24 people in attacks on multiple sites in Ukraine, including a children’s hospital in the capital.

At the NATO summit, Poland will be represented by President Andrzej Duda, who was due to meet Mr Zelensky later in the day.

Poland is among Ukraine’s strongest supporters and will spend 4.12 percent of its GDP on defense this year, according to estimates published by NATO, double the alliance’s guidelines of 2 percent.

One initiative likely to be approved at the three-day summit is to give NATO, rather than the United States, responsibility for coordinating training and military and financial assistance to Ukrainian forces.

The Europeans are also considering increasing the presence of Ukrainians in NATO bodies, although there is no consensus yet on Kyiv’s accession to the alliance.
