Israel released 39 Palestinian prisoners in accordance with a deal brokered by Qatar that allowed Hamas to release 13 Israeli prisoners hours earlier.

Qadura Fares, who heads the NGO Palestinian Prisoners Club, said 33 prisoners released in the West Bank were handed over to a team from the International Committee of the Red Cross. He said the other six had been released in Jerusalem.

The releases on both sides were part of an agreement for a four-day truce in the war between Israel and Hamas that began Friday.

Over the next four days, 150 Palestinian prisoners and 50 Israeli captives are to be released.

Marah Bakeer, arrested in 2015 when she was 16, was among those released in Jerusalem.

She told Tel Aviv Tribune that many released prisoners needed medical treatment.

“All prisoners suffered a high level of medical neglect (while in detention),” she said.

She said she was looking forward to spending time with her family and was considering enrolling in college to pursue a law degree.
