Three people have been killed and more than 20 injured after gunmen opened fire on a peace rally in northern Pakistan. Thousands of residents of Bannu were taking part in a march demanding peace in the area when unidentified gunmen started shooting. Police do not know who was behind the attack.

Tawab Khan, who was participating in the rally, said thousands of his tribesmen were participating in the march when the “miscreants opened fire”. “Our clear message to those who think that because of their act we will give up our peaceful struggle, then they are fools, we will not stop our voice of peace.”

Earlier this week, insurgents killed eight soldiers when a suicide bomber drove his explosive-laden vehicle into the outer wall of a military housing compound in Bannu.

Ten insurgents were killed by troops after the attack.

Pakistan has seen a surge in violence since the Afghan Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. Most of the attacks have been blamed on the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. It is a separate group but allied to the Afghan Taliban.
