The Times of Israel published a report on the Kuwait Specialized Hospital in the Gaza Strip, which is one of two hospitals in the city of Rafah, the birthplace of Dr. Suhaib Al-Homs, who suffers great hardship to perform his work and save lives.

The newspaper began its report by saying that Dr. Suhaib Al-Homs (35 years old), the director of the hospital, remained awake all night due to the sound of explosions and the screams of patients, and he became tired and insomnia in his city of Rafah, which has become a haven for the displaced inside the Gaza Strip.

She said that the sounds of loud shells often shake the windows of Kuwait Hospital, which Al-Homs supervises the management of, but the worst sounds – as the Palestinian doctor says – come from inside the facility itself; The cries of homeless children, the groans of the wounded, and the patients waking up terrified, screaming in pain after realizing they had lost a limb.

The Israeli newspaper says that the war that broke out 100 years ago exposed Dr. Al-Homs, his employees, and all the residents of the Gaza Strip to “unprecedented” violence.

A disaster bigger than us

It quoted Al-Homs as saying over the phone while he was resting between surgeries, “This is a disaster bigger than all of us.”

According to the Israeli newspaper, the hospital receives about 1,500 injured people every day, and at least 50 adults and children die when they arrive with shattered limbs and bone-exposing wounds, and the flesh of their bodies is torn as a result of being hit by projectile fragments.

To create space to accommodate the daily influx of war-wounded into the hospital, Al-Homs “crammed” a few dozen additional beds into the intensive care unit, and vacated the pharmacy, which had been largely empty since the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip deprived the hospital of intravenous injections and most medications, while Patients still lie on the floors.

According to The Times of Israel, the city of Rafah has become a symbol of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, as residential towers have turned into rubble as a result of Israeli bombing.

She added that the Israeli evacuation orders and the expanded attack on the Gaza Strip led to an increase in Rafah’s population from 280,000 people to 1.4 million, causing hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to crowd into “flabby” tents that choke the streets.

Multiple suffering

The newspaper adds that most people spend hours every day searching for food, queuing up outside aid distribution centers, and sometimes walking kilometers to obtain packages of canned beans and rice.

Al-Homs said that fear and tension dominate the features of his colleagues, and blood and dust stain the faces of the wounded who come to the hospital.

The director of Kuwait Hospital confirms, “Every day people die before my eyes because I do not have medicine, burn ointment, or supplies to help them.”

The Israeli newspaper says that Al-Homs knows fellow doctors and nurses who were killed in their homes or on their way to work by artillery shells, missiles and drones.

Al-Homs also lost dozens of medical students he taught at the Islamic University of Gaza, whom he described as “ambitious people.”

“We will all die in the end. Why are we afraid of that?” Al-Homs asks. “We have no choice but to try to live in dignity and help those we can.”
