Palestinian dies one hour after arrest in occupied West Bank | Israeli-Palestinian conflict news

The body of the 58-year-old man was handed over to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society amid intensified Israeli attacks on Palestinian territory.

Israeli troops handed over the body of a Palestinian arrested about an hour earlier in the occupied West Bank to Palestinian health authorities.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society announced on Monday that it had received the body of Ayman Rajeh Abed, 58, from the village of Kafr Dan, near Jenin, shortly after his arrest at dawn on Monday.

The director of Jenin’s public hospital said the body bore signs of beatings and torture.

The Israeli military said Abed was arrested during “counter-terrorism” operations and suffered a “cardiac incident” upon arrival at a detention center. It added that he was initially treated by military medical personnel before being transferred to a hospital in Jenin.

“(The Israeli army) is aware of reports that the suspect died during his evacuation by the Red Crescent,” the army said in a statement, adding that details of the incident were being examined.

The incident came as Israeli forces expanded their operations in the city of Jenin and its environs for a sixth day.

Bulldozers continued to dig up streets and main thoroughfares on Monday.

Israel launched the operation, one of its largest in months, last Wednesday, saying Iranian-backed militant groups were planning to attack civilian targets.

Hundreds of Israeli troops, backed by drones and helicopters, took part in the assault. At least 29 Palestinians were killed, with Israel saying they belonged to armed factions including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

According to Palestinian health authorities, 121 other people were injured.

The attack caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure in Jenin and the densely populated refugee camp adjacent to the city.

“Collective punishment”

Tel Aviv Tribune’s Nida Ibrahim, reporting from Kafr Dan, said Palestinians described Israel’s actions in Jenin as “collective punishment.”

“They say Israel wants to show that Palestinians would pay a high price for supporting armed fighters – those who take up arms and try to fight Israeli forces as they attack Palestinian homes, refugee camps and towns,” she said.

Late Sunday, a man was killed in the western city of Jenin.

On Monday, the Palestinian Red Crescent said another man was hit in the chest by gunfire in Qabatiya, near Jenin. His condition is considered serious.
