The Humanity Policy Adviser at Oxfam James Hoopler confirmed that hunger and famine are a long -actual part of the Gaza Strip, pointing out that there is no need to wait for an official announcement of famine to take urgent measures to save the trapped population.
The humanitarian advisor said during an interview with the island that many have already lost their lives due to hunger, stressing a sharp rise in cases of malnutrition that affects children and all other age groups.
He appealed to the necessity of immediate action without waiting for the official classifications, considering that the current situation requires an urgent and comprehensive response.
Despite the growing level of awareness of the humanitarian crisis in various parts of the United States, Hoopler expressed his frustration with the weak international response.
He pointed out that his organization continues to draw the alarm about the worsening humanitarian situation, but the response remains limited and sometimes completely insufficient compared to the size of the humanitarian catastrophe.
The humanitarian advisor criticized the successive delays and obstacles facing the introduction of aid to the sector, warning that these obstacles directly lead to high death rates and increase the deterioration of the situation continuously.
He warned that the time is not in the interest of the sector’s residents, which makes every delay in aid in itself.
A wider scope of suffering
Hoopler expanded the scope of description of the crisis to include multiple vital sectors and not only the lack of food, as it referred to the acute crisis in the water sector, the suffering of the population from a lack of clean water and the ability to maintain personal hygiene, which creates an ideal environment for the spread of diseases.
He touched on the destruction of sewage and water purification systems, which led to the spread of diseases transmitted through polluted water, noting that this deterioration in health infrastructure exacerbates malnutrition cases, and creates a vicious circle of human suffering that extends all aspects of life in the sector.
The advisor pointed to the painful paradox of humanitarian institutions within the sector, who are suffering from hunger while trying to help others.
He described this situation as good, stressing that seeing his colleagues in Gaza, hearing their voices and watching the suffering is very disturbing.
Today, Wednesday, 111 relief organizations called on governments to take measures that include an immediate and always shooting stand, and to raise all restrictions imposed on the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza in light of the outbreak of famine among its residents.
International organizations, including Mercy Core and the International Refugee Organization (and their headquarters, and the Norwegian Refugee Council, in a statement, warned against the spread of collective famine throughout the sector, while tons of food, clean water, medical supplies and other materials outside Gaza are accumulated, while preventing humanitarian organizations from entering or delivering aid.
