About 40% of those evacuated from the northern border of the Kharkiv region were accommodated in dormitories in Kharkiv and the region – approximately 5,000 people passed through the Kharkiv distribution center during the evacuation week.

The Sytnikov family was evacuated from Vovchansk. She didn’t have time to pack her bags and only took her papers and her cat Sonik. Serhii’s son was the last child to remain in the city. Serhii’s godmother and brother live in Kharkiv, but the family plans to move into a dormitory so as not to crowd their loved ones.

On May 10, the Miahkyi family left the village of Hrafske, located 8 kilometers from the Russian border, on their own. Serhii Miahkyi evacuated with his wife, son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. At the Kharkiv distribution center, they were registered, provided with food and basic necessities, and the family of six was accommodated in one of the city’s university residences.

The family lives in two neighboring rooms. On the floor where the Miahkyi family was housed, there is a shower room, toilet and a kitchen equipped with new appliances. The Miahkyi family has no plans to move, they will live in the dormitory until they can return home.

The same dormitory also accommodates displaced people from Kupiansk and other cities – many of them have been staying there since the start of the war.

Zelensky at the bedside of wounded soldiers at the Kharkiv military hospital

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited wounded soldiers at a military hospital in Kharkiv.

He thanked the servicemen and army medical personnel and presented them with state awards.

The visit came as military officials in Kyiv said Ukrainian units engaged in street fighting with Kremlin forces in the northeastern city of Vovchansk had halted the Russian advance.

Still, a senior Russian official said the frontline push had enough resources to continue.
