The newspaper “Israel Today” revealed on Saturday that a number of senior officials in the Israeli army demanded that the forces deployed in areas of the northern West Bank be provided with tanks, but their request was rejected.
The leaders based their request on the fact that there is information indicating that militants in the northern West Bank have become equipped with weapons that break what they called the “military balance,” such as RPG missiles.
The sources also revealed that the security establishment rejected these officers’ request, due to the ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip and the security conditions in the north.
Senior officers in the Israeli army expressed their belief that the time has come to end what they called the “policy of relative containment” in the West Bank.
They stressed that “the army must act more aggressively there, even if it comes at the expense of stopping the Palestinian Authority’s attempts to extend its security control in the Jenin camp,” as they put it.
Meanwhile, army leaders believe that the Palestinian Authority should be allowed to complete the operation in Jenin, given that it is achieving some achievements, according to what the newspaper quoted them as saying.
In parallel with the genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army expanded its operations and settlers escalated their attacks in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, resulting in the martyrdom of 847 Palestinians and the injury of about 6,700.
The Palestinian Authority has also launched a security campaign against Jenin camp for more than a month, resulting in the death of 14 Palestinians, including 3 children, a journalist, and 6 members of the security services.
