Security will be reinforced across France on New Year’s Eve, with 90,000 members of the police deployed.

Of those, 6,000 will be held in Paris, where Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said more than 1.5 million people are expected to attend the celebrations on the Champs-Élysées.

Speaking at a press conference, the latter spoke of a “very high terrorist threat” due, in part, to “what is happening in Israel and Palestine”referring to the war between Israel and Hamas.

Gérald Darmanin said police will be able to use drones as part of their security work for the first time, and that tens of thousands of firefighters and 5,000 soldiers would also be deployed.

New Year’s Eve celebrations in Paris will focus on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, including DJ sets, fireworks and video projections on the Arc de Triomphe.

The security challenge ahead of the Olympics was highlighted when a tourist was killed in a knife attack near the Eiffel Tower on December 2.

The stabbing attack has sparked concerns in France and abroad about the security of the Games which begin on July 26, just under seven months away.

Large-scale attacks – like that of the Bataclan in 2015 – also remain etched in memories.
