New farmer protests in France and Poland

Less massive than in recent weeks, the mobilizations of angry farmers nevertheless continue in Europe. Example this Friday in France and Poland.

In France, while the tension has gone down a notch since the eventful opening of the agricultural show in Paris, farmers from the Rural Coordination have been talked about again. Friday morning at milk time, around a hundred demonstrators on board their tractors went to the outskirts of Place de l’Etoile, in Paris. They briefly blocked all access with tractors and bales of straw. A surprise operation which aimed to salute the memory of the farmers who committed suicide.

This spontaneous and undeclared demonstration led to the arrest of 66 people. The tractors ended up being escorted by National Police motorcycles. In addition to their national demands, French farmers are questioning European policies in the sector, notably the agreement with Mercosur.

Poland, farmers blocked the road to Lithuania, the only access route from the Baltic States to Poland and the southern countries. The protesters oppose the import of Ukrainian grain and its re-export from Poland to Lithuania, which would then be sent back to Poland as EU imports, without testing or controls.
