New Caledonia: Emmanuel Macron visits the French archipelago

Emmanuel Macron is flying to New Caledonia this evening to set up a “mission” there.

The president announced his departure in the Council of Ministers this Tuesday, he is due to fly out in the evening.

Emmanuel Macron had earlier welcomed the “clear progress” in terms of security in New Caledonia.

After six days of riots, which left six dead and others injured, the return to calm remains fragile. Noumea remains the scene of clashes. Dams dismantled during the day resurface at nightfall.

The Élysée also announced the mobilization “for a time” of soldiers to “protect public buildings”.

The international airport remains closed until Thursday,at least.

Australia and New Zealand announce the sending of several flights to evacuate some of their nationals stranded on the French archipelago.

State of emergency measures are maintained : night curfew, ban on gatherings, transport of weapons, sale of alcohol and the TikTok application.
