This is the largest election ever. In India, 970 million voters, or more than 10% of the world’s population, are called to the polls to renew the lower house of Parliament. Launched in April, the elections enter their 4th phase this Monday.

At the head of the Hindu nationalist party the BJP, outgoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi is running for a third consecutive term and hopes to win a supermajority in Parliament.

In Kashmir, voters flocked to the polls on Monday. It is the first poll since the Modi government revoked the semi-autonomous status of the Muslim-majority territory and took direct control in 2019.

Spread over six weeks from April 19 to June 1, the ballot is organized in seven phases. Results are scheduled for June 4.
