NATO has signed a €1.1 billion contract to purchase 155mm artillery ammunition to replenish its member countries’ dwindling stocks and provide new military aid to Ukraine.

This caliber, among others the Caesar cannons, is one of those most lacking on the front… Its supply could be crucial in the outcome of the Russo-Ukrainian war.

“Russia’s war in Ukraine has become a fight over munitions, so it is important that allies replenish their own stocks while continuing to support Ukraine. We will support Ukraine with the systems, weapons and munitions it needs. needs to establish itself as a sovereign and independent country, because we cannot allow President Putin to win in Ukraine, it would be a tragedy for Ukrainians and dangerous for all of us” said Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, during his press conference in Brussels.

Last summer, Ukraine used between 4,000 and 7,000 artillery shells per day compared to 20,000 on the Russian side, according to European Union estimates. Russia’s arms industry far exceeds Ukraine’s, and Kyiv needs help to match Moscow’s firepower.

But the shells will not arrive quickly: delivery of orders takes between 24 and 36 months, at NATO. The European Union hopes to be able to produce one million shells per year by the end of this year.
